The Nifold
Out on the Nifold Plain, the landscape opens wide. Stretching through the heart of Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park on the Cape York Peninsula, this is one of northern Australia’s great grassland systems—flat, seasonal, and full of quiet life. Termite mounds scatter the plains like weathered monuments, each one a small engine of heat and habitat. After the wet season rains, the savanna stirs. Brolgas and Sarus Cranes dance in the open, Australian Bustards move slowly through the grass, and flocks of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos wheel overhead, their calls cutting through the stillness. Every species here plays its part, tuned to the rhythms of a place where water is never certain and the land waits, patiently, for change.
